Check Study Applicability Before Writing a Care-Plan Rationale
A trustworthy study can still be an imperfect match for a care-plan assignment. Applicability asks whether the population, setting, intervention, comparison, and outcomes meaningfully connect to the supplied case.
The worked examples are teaching aids. Check them against your own source material and the requirements of your specific task.
Start with the task
Cochrane's interpretation guidance includes applicability when drawing conclusions.
Compare conditions, not labels
Build a two-column table: what the study reports and what the assignment actually supplies. Add a third column for the consequence of a mismatch.
In an invented example, a study's educational programme includes repeated supported sessions, while the assignment mentions only written information. Calling both “education” hides a difference in delivery.
Likewise, a result measured immediately after teaching may not establish a later outcome. Record the mismatch rather than changing the case to make the paper fit.
This fictional comparison illustrates the record; it reports no real study or patient data:
Compare conditions, not labels — comparison
Comparison row 1. Dimension: Population; Fictional study: Adults selected by stated eligibility criteria; Supplied assignment case: Eligibility details incomplete; Implication: Similarity remains unknown
Comparison row 2. Dimension: Setting; Fictional study: Scheduled education clinic; Supplied assignment case: Discharge setting; Implication: Available time and support may differ
Comparison row 3. Dimension: Delivery; Fictional study: Repeated supported sessions; Supplied assignment case: Written information only; Implication: The studied package is not the same
Comparison row 4. Dimension: Outcome; Fictional study: Immediate recall score; Supplied assignment case: Later understanding; Implication: The source does not directly establish the named goal
Decide which difference matters
Not every difference invalidates the source. Explain why a particular difference could change the relevance of the result. A missing case detail remains unknown; it is not permission to assume similarity.
Keep this assessment separate from checking the source's date, identity, or type. Those checks establish what the source is. Applicability examines the connection between its conditions and your actual rationale.
Write the bridge explicitly
A useful paragraph states what the study supports, why it is relevant, and what limits the transfer. If the bridge is weak, use the source for a narrower claim or look for evidence closer to the question.
Do not independently implement a study intervention for a real person based on this worksheet. Current guidance, local policy, supervision, and professional judgement remain necessary.
The care-plan evidence-chain guide shows where this comparison belongs. Nursevi can keep the limitation attached to the rationale rather than letting a citation stand in for the missing argument.
